Character Design Progress (26th June)
My primary focus this week was to gather reference for Detective Carnaby and consider how the Art Direction of the game can help further the ideas presented in the brief.
In my first moodboard/ concepts, I believe I focused too much on the Victorian element of the brief, and not enough on the Spanish Modernism aspect, which I believe could really enable for a fresh design that would help it stand out amongst other horror games.
This resulted in further research into Spanish modernism. I came to the conclusion that a stylised look, such as that seen in 'The Backwater Gospel' (2011) would lend itself well to achieving the Spanish modernism look - especially adding black lines to my models.
For my most recent moodboard, I focused on finding real life reference for what I think Detective Carnaby could look like, whilst also considering shape theory and film noir tropes to influence my latest concepts.
Following the feedback from our pitch and the collated feedback, I aim to produce some screenshot mock-ups that take into account how the camera presents Carnaby to the player, as well as ensuring that if Carnaby is more colourful, he doesn't blend in with the environment.
What I currently aim to have produced by the game jam deadline (3rd July):
- Character turnaround (once having decided on final concept)
- Screenshot mock-ups
- 3D style experiment in Maya
